George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of June 28th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, JUNE 28: The Saturday morning outdoor graduation festivities were rain-free, with a few sprinkles arriving after noon, and Sunday was sunny and warm for the backyard parties saluting the graduates.

Last night’s overnight low of 70 degrees was the season’s warmest and then at 1:30 a.m. in the village there was a downpour of rain. I measured 1.7 inches in the village and 1.5 inches at the station. I rechecked the rain gauge and found another .70, giving the radio station a total of 2.20 inches.

Happy 40th anniversary wishes go out to Fred and Linda Rivette of Turin from their church friends. Also, Terry and Sandy Newvine of Port Leyden celebrate their 35th anniversary today.

Harold Tiffany of Glendale reaches his 80th birthday today, with best wishes from his family. The first Corvette was assembled in Flint, Michigan, in 1953. Only 300 were built that year and carried a price tag of $3,490.

  • TUESDAY, JUNE 29: It was an exciting evening in parts of the North Country. A weak tornado touched down in Herkimer with estimated winds up to 80 mph at 3:30 p.m., causing damage to roofs and trees.

Congratulations to Reid and Melissa Covey of Constableville on the birth Monday morning of a son, Robert Alan. He entered the world at 7 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 20 inches long. He will join a big brother Warren at home. Congratulations from their families.

Two couples celebrate their 53rd anniversary today. Percy and Irma Sullivan of Port Leyden, and Ron and Ann Pominville of Beaches Bridge received best wishes from their families.

Also, Jack and Brenda Best of Deer River reach their 42nd anniversary, with happy wishes from their family.

  • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 30: Yesterday, Don and Betty Hall of Point Rock celebrated their 64th anniversary, with belated congratulations from Rich, Elaine and family. Plus, today is Rich’s birthday.

Today, Donni and Sandy Robbins of Glenfield celebrate their 37th anniversary, according to Craig.

I found a note in the mailbox to wish Nan Podkowka of Boonville a happy 31st anniversary from her husband “Happy Feet.”

The guitar player and music producer who helped create the “Nashville Sound,” Chet Atkins, died today in 2001 of cancer at his home in Nashville.

  • THURSDAY, JULY 1: Happy 32nd anniversary wishes to Rod and Sue Baslow of Lyons Falls, from George, Linda and Peanut.

July 1, 2005, was the date that Ford Motor Company completed the last Thunderbird at their factory in Wixom, Michigan. The original Thunderbirds ceased to exist in 1997, but was revived in 2002. Again because of poor sales, the car line ended on this day.

The Chevrolet Corvette was honored in 1992 when the 1 millionth car was produced in Bowling Green, Kentucky. That car featured a white body with a red interior and a black roof. The Corvette’s biggest sales year was 1979 when 53,807 were built.

  • FRIDAY, JULY 2: Congratulations to Brian and Erin Croniser of Boonville on the birth Thursday morning of a daughter. She was named Cora Isabelle, and entered the world at 6 pounds, 4-1/2 ounces, and was 19 inches long. Cora will join two big sisters at home. Congratulations from their families.

Jim and Crystal Smith Girouard of Forestport yesterday welcomed a new son, Ryan Roderick, to the family. He weighed 9 pounds, 2 ounces, and was 21-1/2 long. He will join a brother Adrian and a sister Kendall at home. Congratulations from Rod and Linda Smith.

Gary and Nancy Schneeberger of Glenfield celebrate their 50th anniversary today, with happy wishes from their children, Laurie, Mickey, Heide and Lee.
