George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of June 21st, 2010:

  • MONDAY, JUNE 21: I am back to work from vacationing in Colorado last week with rain free weather. Among the historic old mining towns visited were Telluride and the coal burning train ride from Durango to Silverton, a 3 1/2-hour, 45-mile adventure. I took over 200 amazing pictures of locations we had never visited before.

Today Bob and Elma Freeman of the River Road in Port Leyden reach their 58th anniversary with happy wishes from Norris and Donna and from Sam and Linda.

Yesterday Mike and Debby Gydesen of Boonville celebrated their 23rd anniversary with best wishes and love from Mom and Butch.

Singer Kathy Mattea was born in Cross Lanes, West Virginia 51 years ago and in 1983 on her birthday she signed her first recording contract with Mercury Records.

World War II pin-up girl and actress Jane Russell was born in Bemidji, Minnesota 89 years ago.

Summer officially arrived at 7:28 a.m. and features the longest daylight hours of the year.

  • TUESDAY, JUNE 22: Happy 25th anniversary to Bill and Vickie of Castorland from their three sons, Luke, Ben, and Brandon and also from Mom and Dad Martin.

John Wawrzyniak of Talcottville can celebrate his 85th birthday today with happy wishes from his nieces and nephews.

He was the star of the Walton’s TV series. Today, Ralph Waite reaches his 82nd birthday.

  • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23: Carl Kelly called to wish his wife, Rita, a happy 59th
anniversary and also from their three children and one grandson. They reside on the Kolasa Road in Boonville.

Last night an impressive amount of rain was measured in the village with 1.2 inches in the rain gauge. But, in 1987, I measured 4.80 inches in the village with 5.55 inches at the Boonville Waste Water Treatment plant. Firemen had to pump out 18 to 20 flooded cellars.

Kelly Ulrich of Karlen Terrace in Boonville watched a peacock walk across her back lawn yesterday.

Singers Brooks and Dunn will be entertaining on their last tour in two New York State locations. They are scheduled at Darien Lake on August 27 and in Bethel on August 29 according to their website.

  • THURSDAY, JUNE 24: Yesterday at 1:45 p.m. the entire North Country was rattled by a magnitude 5 earthquake. Its epicenter was in Quebec, Canada and was felt from Chicago to Maine. No major damage was reported.

Happy 44th anniversary wishes to Richard and Jeanette Ash of Lowville from Susie and Larry.

Betty Main of Talcottville can celebrate her 79th birthday with her family today who send their best wishes.

Singer Garth Brooks made his first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry in 1989 on today’s date.

Musician Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac was born in Cornwall, England 63 years ago.

  • FRIDAY, JUNE 25: Bill and Pat Jackson of Turin can celebrate their 55th anniversary today with happy wishes from Rob and Laurie, Brad and Jenna, and from Chad and Denise.

Also, Stanley and Norma Monnat of Castorland reach their 55th year of marriage with congratulations from the Sweeneys.

The children and family of Mary Pilney of Boonville are proud to wish her a special 92nd birthday today.

On June 26, 1976, at that time the world’s tallest, freestanding, self-supporting structure opened. The CN Tower in Toronto, Ontario, Canada stands at 1,815 feet, 5 inches high.
