George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of May 17th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, MAY 17: David and Janet Marmon of Port Leyden reach their 57th anniversary with happy wishes from son David and his four sons.

In Boonville, Hank Treen called to wish his bride, Ilene, a happy 52nd anniversary. He said the weather was beautiful on their wedding day.

We received a call to wish Julius Lehoski of Beaches Bridge a happy 87th birthday from his wife of 65 years, Doris and daughters Patricia and Judy.

Gardening fever struck yesterday, so I planted lettuce, carrots, and radishes since the daytime high temperatures should be in the low 70s all week and no mention of frost.

  • TUESDAY, MAY 18: Congratulations to Jason and Melinda Maciejko of Turin on the birth last evening of a son. He is named Maverick Blaise and weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces. He joins a big sister Jaedyn and big brothers Justice and MacCoy. Happy wishes from their family and friends.

Edna Mathis of Lowville called to wish her twin brother Harvey Everson, a happy 90th birthday. He resides at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility. Then I received a call to wish Edna a happy birthday from the Hill family.

At 8:32 a.m. this morning in 1980, Mount St. Helen’s in Washington State erupted killing 57 people. There were 27 bodies that were never found. Mount St. Helen’s went from 9,600 feet high to 8,300 feet high in seconds. The 24-megaton blast demolished a 230 square mile area around the mountain.

  • WEDNESDAY, MAY 19: Today happy 59th anniversary wishes go out to Bert and Charlotte Austin of Beaver Falls from Joanne and Ken.

The famous comedy film “Smokey and the Bandit” premiered today in 1977. The funny film starred Burt Reynolds, Sally Field, Jackie Gleason and Jerry Reed. The often played song, “East Bound and Down” by Jerry Reed rose as high as number 2 on the country charts that year and came from that movie.

  • THURSDAY, MAY 20: Happy 49th anniversary to Jerry and Joan McVoy of Castorland from Joan’s brother Richard and wife Sandy Bush.

Roger and Donna Myers of Boonville can celebrate their 32nd anniversary today with happy wishes from Ma and Dad and from Mike, Maryann, and the kids.

In 1873 a patent was granted to San Francisco businessman Levi Strauss and Jacob Davis, a tailor from Reno, Nevada for developing tough work pants called blue jeans.

  • FRIDAY, MAY 21: Happy 55th anniversary wishes to Roy and Marge Schindler of Lowville from Tom.

Bob Reese of Port Leyden sends 44th anniversary wishes to wife Sandy and also from Kristen, Darren, Patrick and the grandchildren.

The first state to enact a speed limit was Connecticut in 1901. The stipulated speed limit on highways was 12 mph and eight miles per hour within city limits.

The American National Red Cross was founded today in Washington, DC, in 1881 by Clara Barton and Adolphus Solomons.

There will be no column next week as I will be on my annual fishing trip to Lake Placid.
