George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of May 10th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, MAY 10: Sunday morning featured a 1/4-inch coating of new snow in the village with 3 inches on the Rector Road in Martinsburg.

Son Dan and wife Susan of Newport treated Laurie and I to dinner at Beardslee Castle on Route 5, six miles east of Little Falls. This amazing place was built in 1860 and features superb meals in a genuine castle setting. It was our third visit and each has been enjoyable. Son Chris and Rene called from Grand Junction, Colorado to wish Laurie a happy Mother’s Day as they sat on their deck of their new house. Chris said temperatures have been near 80 all week and was amazed that we had snow Sunday morning.

The Social Security Administration reported the five most popular girls and boys’ names this year. For the girls it is Amanda, Emma, Olivia, Sophia, and Ava. For the boys it is Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Alexander, and William.

Ten years ago this morning golf-ball size hailstones pounded Rome, NY. The stones broke windows, damaged roofs, and dented vehicles through the city.

  • TUESDAY, MAY 11: This was the coldest morning since 1983 as Merry Hill Weather Station recorded 27 degrees. Here at the station we dropped to 24 at 5:35 a.m. and Highmarket dropped to 21. In 1979 we were enjoying 82 degrees. Ten years ago last night a three-hour thunderstorm dropped 2.26 of rain at the weather station and 5.25 was recorded on Mohawk Hill.

It’s been a few years since I’ve seen them, but four turkey vultures have been feeding on a deer carcass just below the radio station.

The Black River Feeder Canal passing through Boonville looks to be bank full. Maybe the Erie Canal needs additional water.

  • WEDNESDAY, MAY 12: Happy 26 anniversary wishes to Bruce and Deb Hirschey of Turin from Gary and Peg.

Today, Agnes Cook of Boonville celebrates her 79th birthday with her family and friends.

Jake and Tammy Wood of Port Leyden reach their 20th anniversary with best wishes from Mom and Dad Poore.

It was this day 10 years ago when NASCAR driver, 19-year-old Adam Petty was killed during practice for a Grand National race at Loudon, New Hampshire. He was the son of Winston Cup driver Kyle Petty and grandson of racing legend Richard Petty.

Country singer Miranda Lambert accepted a wedding proposal from Blake Shelton this past Sunday near her home in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. They have been together for five years.

  • THURSDAY, MAY 13: Today was a good wedding anniversary day. Bob Manning called to wish his wife Suzie a happy 45th anniversary in Lyons Falls. In Boonville, 38th anniversary wishes to Brad Dale from wife Peg and the kids and from little man. Also in Boonville, Bob and Blanche Coscomb celebrate their 21st anniversary.

Dave and Kim Lambert of New Bremen reach their 21st anniversary with best wishes from Nancy.

Weather extremes today include a high temperature of 83 in 2004 and a low of 27 in 2005.

Singer Darius Rucker was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1966.

  • FRIDAY, MAY 14: Josephine Burke of Castorland has 80th birthday greetings coming from Terry, Sharon, and Patch today.

There will be a wedding on Saturday at the Delta Lake Bible Conference Center in Rome. Happy wishes go out to Anthony Martin of Lowville and Stephany Kennedy of Cleveland, NY, on their noontime wedding from all their families.

We use his invention every day. Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit introduced using mercury in thermometers to more accurately read temperatures. He was born in Danzig, Germany, on May 14, 1686, and died in Amsterdam, Holland on September 16, 1736.
