George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of May 3rd, 2010:
- MONDAY, MAY 3: Happy wedding
wishes were sent out Saturday to David Post Jr. and Nicole Webster who
were married at 1 p.m. at St. Martin’s Church in Port Leyden, with
congratulations from Dad and Mom Post and family.
Father Lawrence Marullo, pastor of both the West Leyden and
Constableville Catholic churches, celebrates his 36th year of his
priesthood, with best wishes and congratulations from his
congregations.
Five years ago this morning a moose walked across the road on Route 28
near McKeever.
Traditionally the hummingbirds and orioles should arrive in the North
Country this week; so far I’ve had no reports.
Franki Valli, lead singer of the 60s group The Four Seasons, is 76
today. He is a native of Newark, NJ. With the group he added up 29 top
40 hits and nine as a solo artist. The group was inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
- TUESDAY, MAY 4: Harold Winters
and wife Phyllis of Boonville have 53rd anniversary wishes to share
with each other, with best wishes from their children and
grandchildren.
Happy 19th anniversary to Ken and Karen Knoblauch of the West Road
from Mom Croniser and the family.
I received a report of hummingbirds at Mac and Judy Ingersoll’s home
on the Echo Lake Road this past Sunday, right on schedule.
Baseball fans will remember this day in 1965 when San Francisco Giants
outfielder Willie Mays pounded out his 512th career home run setting a
National League record. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in
1979.
- WEDNESDAY, MAY 5: A brief but
intense rainstorm crossed the area shortly after 1 p.m. yesterday.
There was thunder, lightning, and heavy rain. The Merry Hill Weather
Station measured .38 inches of rain and I clocked a 25-mph wind at
1:04 p.m. Hancock Airport in Syracuse had a gust of wind at 63-mph,
then the sun appeared.
Today Stella Domagala of Glenfield celebrates her 94th birthday with
special wishes from her children, 10 grandchildren, and 25
great-grandchildren, plus wishes from Kenny and Carol Kulpa and their
family.
George Pickard of Boonville celebrates his 90th birthday today with
his friends at Kortenaer Village.
Rob and Ashley Schneider of Port Leyden have two reasons to celebrate.
At Crouse-Irving Hospital in Syracuse, their first daughter, Abbie
Jean, came into the world on Sunday at 4 pounds, 15-1/2 ounces, and
daughter number two, Leah Robin, arrived Monday weighing 5 pounds, 1
ounce, and all are doing fine according to Great-Grandma Ward.
- THURSDAY, MAY 6: The families
of Dan and Michelle Planck of Talcottville send congratulations to
them on the arrival last evening of a son, Donivin Gaige. He weighed 9
pounds, 4 ounces, and was 20-1/2 inches in length. He joins a big
sister and two big brothers at home.
Moose Radio congratulates Newsman Brian Best of Deer River on his 14th
anniversary, as he joined us in 1996.
In 1928 Chrysler offered a new model, the DeSoto, selling 80,000 cars
the first year. Production ended in November 1961 and was replaced
with the Chrysler Newport.
- FRIDAY, MAY 7: I received a
card to announce a belated 57th anniversary wish to Carl and Audrey
Fenton of the Glenfield area, who celebrated April 18, from their card
playing pals.
Today Dennis and Barbara Fruin of Hawkinsville reach their 33rd
anniversary, with happy wishes from Barb and Gene.
One of my early rock and roll favorites, Ricky Nelson, was born on May
8, 1940 in Teaneck, NJ. While appearing and singing on the Ozzie and
Harriet TV show, he became a teen idol, scoring 30 top 40 hits from
1957 to 1962. On New Year’s Eve in 1985, he perished in a plane crash
in DeKalb, Texas.
