following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 26th, 2010:
- MONDAY, APRIL 26: On Saturday’s
program, the family of Harold Wheelock of Boonville wished him a happy
80th birthday.
Today Leon Bowen of the Stucky Road can celebrate his 77th birthday
with happy wishes from all his family, including wife Wanda, son John,
daughters Melissa, Rose, Holly, 12 grandchildren and 15 great
grandchildren.
Every time an earthquake is measured, the Richter Scale is used.
Charles Francis Richter was the man who developed the earthquake
magnitude scale that is still used. He was born in 1900 near Hamilton,
Ohio and died in Pasadena, California September 30, 1985.
Actress-comedian Carol Burnett was born in San Antonio, Texas, 77
years ago.
Singer Bobby Rydell, one of the “Golden Boys of Bandstand” was born in
Philadelphia 68 years ago.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 27: Happy 79th
birthday wishes are sent to Dorothy Gardner of the East Martinsburg
Road from Mike, Janette, and Nicholas.
I’ve received a half dozen phone calls reporting snow in the air. The
temperature has dropped to 35 degrees with a 26 mph wind at 8:40 a.m.
This cold front will be with us for the next two days and a warm up
arriving during the weekend with temperatures near 70.
The Class of 1963 may remember the #1 pop song on this day, “I Will
Follow Him”. Little Peggy March had just turned 15 with three more
school years ahead when this song reached the top of the charts. She
gets the credit for being the youngest female performer to reach the
number one spot on the pop charts.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28: The
village received just enough snow to turn vehicle rooftops white with
several surrounding areas reporting up to 2 1/2 inches.
Gene and Louise Lyndaker of Croghan can celebrate their 54th
anniversary with congratulations from their family.
Tonight there will be a full moon and it carries several names. It’s
often called a Full Pink Moon because of one of the earliest
widespread flowers, wild ground phlox. The early tribes called it a
Full Fish Moon because the chad swim upstream to spawn.
Tonight Show host Jay Leno was born in New Rochelle, NY 50 years ago.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 29: Today Joe
and Shirley Peters, address unknown, celebrate their 57th anniversary
with wishes from their bag lady.
Six years ago today, the last Oldsmobile Alero Sedan was produced at
the Lansing Car assembly plant in Michigan and is now on display at
Lansing’s RE Transportation Museum. The final 500 cars were dark
metallic cherry red and had “Final 500” emblems placed on them.
One of Nascar’s greatest drivers, Dale Earnhardt was born in 1951 in
Kannapolis, North Carolina, nicknamed “The Intimidator”, added up a
total of 76 race victories before he was killed February 18, 2001.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 30: Happy 66th
anniversary wishes to Dick and Cecilia Fuller of Petries Corners with
love from Terry and Sharon.
Traditionally this coming week is when the hummingbirds start arriving
here in the North Country.
Country music legend Willie Nelson was born in Abbott, Texas 77 years
ago. He wrote his first song at the age of seven and recorded over 300
albums and was elected into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1993 and
still tours the country.
Today, the US Postal service is offering 10 first class stamps
designed to promote adoption of animals from shelters. The 44-cent
stamps feature five cats and five dogs as part of a “Stamps to the
Rescue” campaign.
