George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of April 19th, 2010:
- MONDAY, APRIL 19: Happy 41st
anniversary wishes to Dick and Linda Dean of the Pine Grove Road near
Lowville from all the Deans.
Cliff and Cathy Lehman of Denmark celebrate their 35th anniversary
today, with best wishes from Rick and Colleen West and family.
It was a sad day in 2004 as the Boonville Division of Ethan Allen
Furniture plant officially announced their planned closing in July,
which would effect 260 workers. To this day the plant is still vacant.
- TUESDAY, APRIL 20: Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Vrubel of Turin celebrate their 64th anniversary with
congratulations from their family.
Basketball fans may remember this day in 1986 when Chicago Bulls’
Michael Jorden added up 63 points in a NBA playoff game against the
Boston Celtics, which set a post-season scoring record.
It was a tragic day in Littleton, Colorado, in 1999. Two students went
on a shooting spree, killing 12 students, a teacher, wounded 23, and
then killed themselves. That event led to new standards in lockout
procedures nationwide to help prevent future tragedies.
- WEDNESDAY, APRIL 21: Happy 44th
anniversary wishes to Ben and Pat Swiernik of Boonville from their
children and grandchildren.
The huge Space Needle in the Seattle Center, Seattle, Washington,
marks its anniversary today. The needle was built for the 1962 World’s
Fair, is 605 feet tall, weighs 9,550 tons, and was built to withstand
winds up to 200 mph. This famous tower contains a gift shop and
features the rotating Sky City Restaurant. For lightning protection,
there are 25 lightning rods on its roof.
- THURSDAY, APRIL 22: Today Earth
Day is celebrated bringing attention to the earth’s environment. The
first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970 in the United States. Since
that beginning, an estimated 20 million people participate today in
various events, including 10,000 grade schools and high schools, 2,000
colleges and 1,000 communities.
Official weather station extremes for this day include a high
temperature of 78 in 1985, a low of 21 in 1981, and 1.3 inches of snow
in 1991 and 1993. Also, 1993 featured a blizzard like storm with heavy
snow and 48 mph winds. By tomorrow morning, the Jackson Hill Weather
Station measured 11-1/4 inch of new snow bringing the snowfall up to
242.9 inches. In comparison, this year’s 105.2 inches is the second
lowest amount of snowfall since records began in 1949. The lowest
amount was 105 inches from the winter of 1982-83. With this year’s
lack of average snow, which is 210 inches, we may be in for an awfully
dry summer.
Today Henry Daskiewich of Boonville reaches his 80th birthday with
love and best wishes from wife Marilyn, children, and grandchildren.
- FRIDAY, APRIL 23: Today David
and Pat Rounds of Lyons Falls can celebrate their 50th anniversary
with happy wishes from Bruce, Rene, and the rest of the family.
Mildred Norton of the West Road is 93 today with congratulations from
her family and friends.
Happy birthday to Pauline Seelman of Constableville on her 82nd, from
her niece Lois and husband Bob Gregory.
Singer Roy Orbison was born in Vietnam, Texas, in 1936. During his
successful career he scored over 30 hit songs and died of a heart
attack December 6, 1988, at the age of 52. He was inducted into the
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the year before his death.
