George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of April 12th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, APRIL 12: On Saturday’s program we wished a happy wedding day to Randi Maurer of West Leyden and Mason Swancott of Boonville, who were being married at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville. Love and best wishes from their families.

Today, happy 58th anniversary wishes to Bill Covey of Port Leyden from wife Jenny.

Also today, happy anniversary and happy birthday to Phoebe Decker of Alder Creek from husband Roger and son Steven on their 44th anniversary.

A special happy birthday to Beatrice Kelly who reaches her 95th year with best wishes from B.J. and the family.

While rototilling my garden yesterday, a little surprise took place. As the tines spun, out popped a toad. He looked rather bewildered but luckily wasn’t struck. After sitting for five minutes he hopped away.

  • TUESDAY, APRIL 13: This was a special day in golfing history in 1997. Eldrick “Tiger” Woods, at 21, in Augusta, Georgia won the Masters Tournament by a (record) 12 strokes. As an infant he was encouraged by his father to play golf and the rest is history.

The third president of the U.S., Thomas Jefferson was born in Albermark County, Virginia in 1743. He was president from 1801 to 1809 and died July 4, 1826.

  • WEDNESDAY, APRIL 14: Today Clayton and Marjorie Nellenback of Route 26, Ava have two reasons to celebrate. It’s their 58th anniversary and her birthday with congratulations from sister-in-law Dorothy Nellenback.

Country music Hall of Fame member Loretta Lynn reaches her 75th birthday. She was born in Butcher Holler, Kentucky and she was the first woman to win the Country Music Association’s entertainer of the year award in 1972.

The greatest snowfall in U.S. history arrived today and into tomorrow at Silver Lake, Colorado in 1921 when 76 inches was measured. It was thought that Montague in Lewis County broke that record January 11, 1997 with 77 inches. The National Weather Service declined to give them the honor because of what they described as incorrect record keeping.

  • THURSDAY, APRIL 15: Congratulations to former Boonville resident Steve Gillett and his wife Jen of Rochelle Park, New Jersey on the birth Saturday of their first baby. Addison Alaina entered the world at 8 pounds, 2 ounces, and 20 3/4 inches in length. She is the first granddaughter of Denny and Sharon Gillett of Boonville and happy wishes from Aunt Kelly and Uncle Jamie Backer and sons Ryan and Trevor.

Today, Belle Kilb of Forestport can celebrate her 92nd birthday with best wishes from Robert and Florence Laux and family.

Tomorrow, country singer Alan Jackson will receive his star in the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His star will be embedded in front of the Kodak Theater on Hollywood Boulevard with the ceremony taking place at 11:30 a.m. Pacific Time.

The 25-year co-host of TV’s Hee Haw, Roy Clark was born 77 years ago in Meherrin, Virginia and is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

  • FRIDAY, APRIL 16: Bob and Nancy Zehr of Croghan reach their 44th anniversary with love from their family.

Also, Sheldon and Betty Main of Talcotville can celebrate their 44th today with happy wishes from their family.

Today is a special day, as Ester Windover of Lowville will find 91 candles on her birthday cake with special wishes from her family and friends.

Official weather extremes for this day shows a high reading of 82 in 2002; a low of 24 in 1981 and 1988; 17.5 inches of new snow in 2007 with 18 inches on the ground; and 1.41 inches of rain in 1996.

Eight years ago a moose crossed the Thayer Hill Road at 7:30 a.m. near the home of Bob and Liz Miller.
