George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of March 29th, 2010:

  • MONDAY, MARCH 29: On Saturday’s program we sent out congratulations to Judy and Jason Balash of Ilion on the birth Friday of a daughter, Brooke Lee, who weighed 6 pounds, 9-1/4 ounces, and was 19-1/2 inches long. Jason is formerly of Boonville, and best wishes from Dad and Caron of Boonville.

Also born on Friday to Paul and Melissa Baxter of Port Leyden, a daughter, Chloe Rene, who arrived weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 20 inches in length, who will join big brother Joey at home. Congratulations from both families.

  • TUESDAY, MARCH 30: With a full moon last night, a son was born to Joe and Carrie Dolan of the Golden Road, Boonville, yesterday. Daniel entered the world at 8 pounds, 12 ounces, and will join two brothers at home. Happy wishes from their families.

It was this day in 1867 when U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward completed a deal with Russia to purchase Alaska for $7 million or roughly 2 cents an acre.

John Denver’s first #1 song, “Sunshine On My Shoulder,” became the most popular song on the pop charts in 1974. During his career he sold 32.5 million records before his death October 12, 1997, when his ultra-light airplane crashed in Montery Bay, CA.

  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31: A 131-year-old temperature record was broken yesterday in Colorado. The Denver International Airport reached 82 degrees at 3:32 p.m. MDT. The old record was 81 set in 1879 when Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th President of the U.S.

Today is Transfer Day in the Virgin Islands, remembering 1917 when the U.S. took possession from Denmark at a cost of $25 million.

Herb Alpert of Tijuana Brass fame was born in Los Angeles, CA, 75 years ago.

  • THURSDAY, APRIL 1: How the time flies. It was 46 years ago today when I started my radio career here at WBRV at 3 p.m. After several million spoken words I’m still here and still enjoy being part of the North Country.

Happy 79th birthday wishes to Bill Covey of Port Leyden from Reid, Melissa, and Warren.

Opening day of trout season should find waterways at acceptable levels for a change with sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60s.

  • FRIDAY, APRIL 2: The forecast for the weekend calls for some record-breaking temperatures. We should climb into the mid-70s today and the low 80s tomorrow. This time of the year sometimes brings unwelcome changes. On tomorrow’s date in 1985, a major snowstorm began and by the next morning the Jackson Hill Weather Station measured 11.5 inches of new snow. Also on the same day in 2000, torrential rain soaked the area and by the next morning 1.99 inches was collected. Weather extremes today shows a high temperature of 57 in 1986, a low of 13 in 2003, 4.5 inches of new snow in 1985, and 60 inches on the ground in the woods in 1971.
