George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of March 22nd, 2010:

  • MONDAY, MARCH 22: Congratulations to Courtney Williams and Richard Farr of Boonville on the birth Friday morning, March 19, of a daughter, Reily LeeAnn Farr. She entered the world at 6 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 19 inches in length with happy wishes from their families and friends.

Also Friday, Ryan and Stacy Battles of Port Leyden welcomed a son, Coleton Ryan who weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 20 1/2 inches long and will join a sister at home. Happy wishes are from Great Grandma Ward and family.

Yesterday, Bob Freeman, who lives on the bank of the Black River near Port Leyden, reached his 79th birthday with love from wife Elma, their children, grandchildren and great grandson Hunter.

As we begin spring, we sometimes are over confident that there will be no more snow but mother nature always has her way and in 1999, 14.4 inches of new snow was measured and all area schools were closed that morning.

  • TUESDAY, MARCH 23: Last night brought the first measurable rain in 22 days. In the village at 4:15 a.m. there was 8/10” in the rain gauge.

It was this morning in 1972 when 23.3 inches of new snow was measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station. The snowfall for 1972 totaled 312 inches for the season.

This Saturday night, March 27 will be the 50th anniversary party at the Boonville Lodge of Elks #2158 with 120 members signed up for the festivities and the prime rib dinner.

  • WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24: A trace of snow was measured this morning in the North Country with a half inch on the Rector Road, west of Martinsburg and 3/10th in Highmarket. That’s nothing compared to the 22 inches of new snow measured on Jackson Hill in 1977. That year on this day there was still 58 inches in the woods and snowfall for this date was 329.5” compared to this year’s 105”. The season’s snowfall in 1977 ended at 343 inches, the snowiest winter since records have been kept.

It was a busy telephone day with 23 calls being answered here. Most unusual but true, we received information that three sets of twins have birthdays today.

  • THURSDAY, MARCH 25: Congratulations to B.J. and Deniella Bailey of Lyons Falls on the birth yesterday morning of a son. Samuel Issac entered the world at 9 pounds, 12 ounces, and was 22 inches in length and will join a big sister Grace at home with happy wishes from the family.

Happy 90th birthday wishes to two North Country residents. Alma Kohler of Port Leyden and Bob Bush of Martinsburg both celebrate that big number. Best wishes to Alma from Vivian and seven nieces and to Bob from brother, Bernie and his wife Barb.

I’ve waited long enough and finally this morning a red winged blackbird was hopping around on the radio station lawn.

Country Music Hall of Fame member Buck Owens died in his sleep in Bakersfield, California in 2006. He and Roy Clark hosted TV’s Hee Haw for over 15 years. It was reported that he died of a heart attack at the age of 76. He enjoyed 21 number one songs during his career.

Actor Robert Culp, co-star of the 1960’s T.V. show with Bill Cosby, I Spy, died yesterday in Los Angeles at 79 when he fell and struck his head.

  • FRIDAY, MARCH 26: An arctic blast of cold air arrived overnight. Here at the station the temperature dropped to 17 degrees with a 31-mph wind at 6:22 a.m. and a wind-chill of minus 20 at 8:28 a.m. I didn’t see any robins this morning, they probably packed up and headed back south.

If you were a member of the Class of 1958 you have to remember the hit song, ‘Sixteen Candles’ by the Crests. The lead singer, Johnny Maestro died of cancer late Wednesday in Florida. He earned a gold record for the hit song, ‘The Worst That Could Happen’ in 1968 as the lead singer of Brooklyn Bridge group. His last performance with the Brooklyn Bridge group was January 17 at a Doo-Wop Party at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.
