George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 15th, 2010:
- MONDAY, MARCH 15: Snow on the
ground levels in the village took a massive drop in one week. Last
Monday I measured 16-1/2 inches and this morning I found 4-1/2 inches.
The above normal winds and upper 40-degree temperatures melted most of
it.
Today, Isadore and Lillian Paluck of Constableville reach their 58th
wedding anniversary.
Ramona Zehr of Beaver Falls celebrates her 81st birthday. Happy
birthday to Mom from Jay and Joyce.
The Boonville Lodge of Elks welcomed 15 new members Saturday evening,
during initiation. Interesting to note as five out of 15 were females
and eight said they were snowmobilers. The Lodge pins have featured
snowmobiles four times, including the new 50th anniversary pin
depicting the covered bridge, a trail groomer, and a snowmobile. The
Lodge ordered over 700 pins for their 50th anniversary year.
Actor Peter Graves of “Mission Impossible” fame, died of an apparent
heart attack Sunday outside his home in Los Angeles. He would have
celebrated his 84th birthday on Thursday, March 18.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 16:
Congratulations to Andrew and Dawn Pfendler of Boonville on the birth
yesterday of a son, Luke Andrew, who weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces, and
is their first baby.
Today, Bob and Cheri Failing celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary,
with congratulations from their family and friends.
Comedian, actor, director Jerry Lewis, a native of Newark, New Jersey,
reaches his 84th birthday.
Two milestones were set today in automotive history. In 1958, Ford
Motor Company produced its 50 millionth car, a Thunderbird. In 1966,
General Motors reached its 100 millionth car, an Oldsmobile Toronado.
I received a report of at least 300 geese flying over Forestport this
morning.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 17: I heard
the first tweet of a robin at the radio station this morning, and a
flock of geese flew over Boonville and West Leyden.
Agnes Krug of Lyons Falls celebrates her 98th birthday today, with
happy wishes from her family.
The Irish celebrate with parades and revelry today, remembering St.
Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, who died at Saul, Downpatrick,
Ireland, in 461 A.D. The first St. Patrick’s Day parade was in New
York City in 1762 and was held by Irish soldiers serving in the
British army. Today, millions of Americans celebrate their cultural
identity and history in honor of St. Patrick.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 18: Today is a
special day for Cecelia Chrzanowski of Turin, as she reaches her 92nd
birthday, with love and best wishes from all her family.
Singer Charlie Pride was born in Sledge, Mississippi 72 years ago.
He’s had more than 50 hit records on the charts, and is a member of
the Country Music Hall of Fame. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in May
1993, received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in July
1999, and scored 29 number one country songs.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 19: Happy 58th
anniversary wishes to Ralph and Frieda Roggie of Lowville from
daughter Joyce and Jay.
Today, Robbie and Jeri Jones of Lyons Falls reach their 50th
anniversary, with happy wishes from their maid of honor and best man,
and also from their three sons, two daughters-in-law, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and friends and neighbors.
Yesterday, a flock of gulls, about 30 strong, landed in the field next
to the radio station for the first time. This morning I spotted two
small deer grazing in the field across from the station. I also
received the first report of a bluebird in the Greig area, which is
another sign of an early spring. The killdeer birds arrived this
morning also.
Also yesterday, Fess Parker, who was America’s favorite Davy Crockett
TV star, died of natural causes at his home in Santa Ynez Valley,
California, at age 85. He died on his wife Marcella’s 84th birthday.
They had been married for 50 years.
Today, Matthew’s Place in downtown Boonville celebrates 20 years of
serving the North Country.
