George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 1st, 2010:
MONDAY, MARCH 1: I received a
call Saturday to wish Virginia Burke of Port Leyden a happy 91st
birthday from the Lowville Isenekers.
Also on Saturday, Helen Keppler of Deferiet reached her 82nd birthday
with best wishes from Ilene.
Chuck Myers down the road from the radio station watched two skunks
cross the road and one was pure white with no markings.
Country music legend Johnny Cash married June Carter at the Methodist
Church in Franklin, Kentucky, on today’s date in 1968.
TUESDAY, MARCH 2: Weather extremes for this day include a
57-degree reading at the Jackson Hill Weather Station in 1991 and a
low temperature of minus 31 here at the station in 1980. The most snow
in the woods on Jackson Hill was 54 inches in 1977, and the least
amount on the level ground was 7 inches in 1983.
It seems to me in the past three weeks that the roadways are
experiencing heavier frost heaving than normal. Route 46 and Route 294
to West Leyden seem to show the most movement and maybe because of
more underground springs in their vicinities.
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 3: Happy belated birthday wishes to Mabel
Bauer of Greig who celebrated her 89th birthday Tuesday with happy
wishes from her loving family.
Today, Mary Mamrosh of Remsen reaches her 89th birthday with
congratulations from daughter Connie.
At 9:22 p.m. last evening in 2005, an earthquake measuring 2.5 on the
Richter Scale shook an area southwest of Cornwall, Ontario, Canada,
and west of Malone, but was not felt in this area.
Due to the 40-degree temperatures this week in Boonville, the Kiwanis
Skating Rink has been closed until cooler weather returns.
The 45th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards show is scheduled for
Sunday, April 18, at 8 p.m. from Las Vegas. Lady Antebellum has the
most nominations with seven. Miranda Lambert has six, and Taylor Swift
has five.
THURSDAY, MARCH 4: Happy 21st anniversary wishes to Kevin and
Rene Reed of Boonville from little Linda, George, and Peanut.
I discovered that the crows I feed at the station will not eat
popcorn. I don’t understand how a crow can peck on a dead skunk, but
will not touch popcorn. Does anyone know why?
The movie serial “The Lone Ranger” was first released on this date in
1938 based on the radio program that began in 1933 and continued for
two decades.
The Grand Ole Opry comedian Minnie Pearl died of a stroke today in
1996 at age 83. She joined the Opry in 1940 and was elected to the
Country Music Hall of Fame in 1975. She always wore a straw hat with
the $1.98 price tag and was featured on the television show “Hee Haw”
from 1970 to 1990.
FRIDAY, MARCH 5: Congratulations to Stan Morczek and Valerie
Platt of Highmarket on the birth of a daughter last evening. Alecia
Grace weighed 7 pounds and was 20 inches in length, with happy wishes
from both families.
Today, Jack and Jane Swancott of Boonville celebrate their 55th
anniversary and their grandson Mason Swancott celebrates his birthday.
Good luck to two Boonville snowmobile racers, Gary Mayer Jr. and Zack
DeVoe, who will be racing in Halliburton, Ontario, Canada, in the
Eastern Pro Circuit this weekend.
Boonville summer resident John Gilbert called from his winter home,
north of Tampa, Florida, to report the temperature was 35 degrees at
5:50 a.m. this morning compared to our 22 degrees here at the station.
He said heating bills using electric and propane have been sky-high
all winter, as most houses are not insulated for cold weather.
