George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 8th, 2010:
MONDAY, FEBRUARY 8: This past
Friday and Saturday featured the most snowmobile trailers passing
through because the more southern areas have lost a good share of
their snow cover. Unfortunately, our local news reported on four
snowmobile accidents, including two fatalities, one of which was a
drowning in the Fulton Chain.
I received a call from some very happy grandparents to congratulate
Shawn and Nikki Koster of Lowville, on the birth Saturday evening of a
daughter. Bentley Rose entered the world at 6 pounds, 14-1/2 ounces,
and was 18 inches long.
On yesterday’s date in 1964, America had their first chance to see the
“Beatles” when they landed at New York’s Kennedy Airport with 3,000
screaming fans waiting to see them. Two days later they made their
first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show with an estimated 73 million
U.S. viewers tuning in.
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 9: How many times have you heard the phrase,
“See Ya Later Alligator?” That was the name of a hit song from the
mid-50s by Bill Haley and the Comets. Haley enjoyed 12 Top 40 hits
from 1955 to 1956, and he sold an estimated 60 million records before
his fatal heart attack on this day in 1981. In 1986, he was one of the
first inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 10: Happy 60th anniversary wishes to
Arletha Bellinger of Route 177 from husband Dick and the rest of the
family.
Happy birthday wishes go out to Peggy Anna of Boonville who celebrates
her 86th birthday today from her family.
This winter is experiencing a snow drought with only 72.8 inches of
snowfall with 10 inches on the ground at the Weather Station. Last
year 180 inches had fallen with 25 inches on the ground.
During the Boonville Snow Festival of 1979, brutal cold invaded,
dropping the temperature to minus 37. Ice making on the race track was
easy that year.
Famous birthdays today include actor Robert Wagner, a native of
Detroit, Michigan, is 80 today.
Glasgow, Scotland native Donovan was born in 1946. We could never
forget his huge hit song “Mellow Yellow” and dozens of others during
the 1960s.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 11: Today, Richard and Sandy Bush of
Lowville celebrate their 49th anniversary, with happy wishes from the
Kabans.
During 1979’s Snow Festival in Boonville, the temperature dropped to
minus 30 with a minus 40 at Beaver River Station at the end of
Stillwater Reservoir.
Country singer Miranda Lambert, an animal lover, has scheduled her
third annual “Cause For Paws” benefit auction in Tyler, Texas, on
Saturday, May 15. All proceeds go to the Humane Society of East Texas.
Actor Burt Reynolds was born in Waycross, Georgia, 74 years ago.
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 12: I received a call to congratulate Floyd
and Kathleen Farr of Port Leyden on the birth of a son at midnight.
His name was not given, but he weighed in at 5 pounds, 6 ounces, and
was 17 inches long, with best wishes from Nanna and Papa.
NASCAR racing begins Sunday at Daytona Beach, the first of 36 races.
The very first race for modified stock cars on the 3.2-mile track was
held today in 1948, a week before NASCAR was officially incorporated.
The 150-mile race was won by Red Byron, becoming the first NASCAR
champion.
Country-singer Toby Keith’s first hit, “Should’ve Been A Cowboy,” was
released by Mercury Records in 1993.
