George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 25th, 2010:
MONDAY, JANUARY 25: Weather in
Boonville can be very changeable. Today we expect a lot of rain with a
high temperature near 50, but we have a lake-effect snow watch
starting tomorrow morning. We can go from one extreme to the other.
It’s interesting to note that this morning’s snow level officially was
measured to be 9 inches. Out of the last 20 years, only two other
years, 2006 and 1995, had less snow on this date with only 3 inches
found. The most snow was 51 inches in 2003. In 1993, the temperature
rose to 51 degrees and I had two robin reports. In 2002, two flocks of
geese flew past the radio station in a northerly direction.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 26: Wow, what a downpour yesterday. I measured
1.90 inches of rain this morning and adding yesterday morning’s .88,
we ended up with 2.78 inches of rain. Parts of our snowmobile trail
system were underwater and will take days to drain out.
Two babies were born in the past 24 hours. Congratulations to Mark and
Charity Savage of the Thayer Hill Road on the birth last evening of a
son, Tristan Allen. He entered the world at 5 pounds, 13 ounces. Happy
wishes are from grandparents Scott and Lynn Sawyer, and Jerry and Rita
Savage.
A daughter, Alexis Lynn, was born to Larry and Carrie Walseman of
Houseville this morning. She weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 21
inches long. Congratulations from Branden, Tara and Nolan.
A happy 92nd birthday to Francis Lahah of Boonville from the Fox
family.
I received a report of a redwing blackbird in a bird feeder in Turin
yesterday. Either the bird was two months early or never went south
last fall.
The first episodes of TV’s “The Dukes of Hazard” appeared on the air
in 1979 and ran for seven seasons.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 27: It was announced yesterday by the World
Meteorological Organization that the world record for high wind was
broken. Mount Washington, New Hampshire, had the record of 231 mph
since April 12, 1934. The news release stated that a 253 mph gust was
recorded in Australia’s Barrow Island during Cyclone Olivia in 1996.
Mount Washington can still claim the wind speed record for the
Northern and Western hemispheres.
In 1956, Elvis Presley’s first RCA record, “Heartbreak Hotel,” was
released.
During an evening recording session in Nashville in 1959, Johnny
Horton recorded his best remembered song, “The Battle of New Orleans.”
THURSDAY, JANUARY 28: For the past several days, lake-effect
snow has been found north of the area and has not drifted southward.
The snowmobile trails need a new top coating, as they are very icy
with nothing to groom in our area.
Happy birthday to Grandpa Emerson Wood of Port Leyden on his 79th
birthday from Craig, Tammy, and Dalayna, and from Carol, Gary and
Nicholas.
Happy 76th birthday wishes to Frieda Roggie, the best mom ever, from
Joyce, Jay and family.
The TV series, “Fantasy Island,” began a six-year run on ABC in 1978.
Tragedy struck this morning in 1986 when the space shuttle Challenger
blew up 73 seconds into its flight from Cape Canaveral. All seven
astronauts were killed.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 29: Congratulations to Kyle and Jessica Widrick
of Croghan on the birth Wednesday of a daughter, Zoey Joy, who weighed
7 pounds, 9 ounces. She will join a big brother Winston at home. Best
wishes from Mom and Dad Zehr.
Happy 39th anniversary wishes to Bob and Gloria Dosztan of Watson from
Billy, Joanna, and Holly, and their families.
Tonight’s Torchlight Parade will be a cold one, but cold doesn’t
bother snowmobilers. The temperature will drop to 10 below zero and a
windchill of 25 below, with possible 20 mph winds. A big turnout was
expected.
