George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 11th, 2010:
MONDAY, JANUARY 11: On
Saturday’s program, 50th anniversary wishes were sent out to Richard
and Jackie Kaban, north of Lowville, from friends Sandra and Dick
Bush.
Weather extremes today include a high temperature of 47 in 1980, a low
of 29 below zero at the radio station in 1979, 12 inches of snow in
2007, and 45 inches of snow on the ground in 1977. There was no snow
on the ground in 2008. A huge lake-effect snowstorm was headed for the
North Country today in 1997.
TUESDAY, JANUARY 12: Happy 53rd anniversary wishes to Kermit
and Joyce Klingbail of West Leyden from Ian and Joanie.
Jim Longway of Constableville is going to celebrate his 75th birthday
today, with congratulations to dad from Deb and Joe, David and Jen,
Jeff, and their families.
A massive snowfall was measured this morning in 1997. Montague up on
Tug Hill measured 77 inches in 24 hours and the snowfall continued
today. This four-day lake-effect snowstorm brought 47 inches of snow
to Boonville and 95 inches to the Montague area. Four Boonville
snowmobilers caught in the storm were forced back to the Montague Inn,
which had closed for the evening. Owners at the time, Wayne and Janie
Clift, heard them knocking on the door and let them in, where they
spent the night. John Pfeiffer of Boonville, one of the sledders
involved, has some great stories to tell of that trail ride.
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 13: In 1997, between 40 and 50 camp owners
were rescued from the deep snow in Montague. The Valley Snow Travelers
Snowmobile Club brought up their trail groomer to drive down roads and
driveways, followed by snowmobiles to check on snowbound residents.
The 95-inch snowstorm settled to 5 feet with roads having snowbanks up
to 12 feet high. The 24-hour snowfall of 77 inches was thought to have
broken the previous record of 76 inches recorded in 1921 in Silver
Lake, Colorado. The National Weather Service denied Montague the
record on May 2, 1997, because of incorrect snow measuring.
If you watched the TV series, “Father Knows Best,” in the 1950s, you
may remember the teenage son, Bud. He was portrayed by Billy Gray who
celebrates his 72nd birthday today.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 14: I received a call to send congratulations
to William and Kim Pfendler of Woodgate on the birth yesterday of a
daughter, Madison Claire, who weighed 7 pounds, 2-3/4 ounces, and was
21 inches long. Best wishes from Grandpa and Grandma Pfendler and all
the family.
Folklore dictates that today is St. Hilary’s Day, the coldest day of
the year. It won’t happen here in the North Country, as temperatures
will remain in the 30s today, tonight, and tomorrow. Fairbanks,
Alaska, has endured some brutal cold temperatures lately. Yesterday’s
low was minus 36. There’s a website you might like to check. It’s
newsminer.com. Their sunrise is at 10:30 a.m. with sunset at 3:29 p.m.
It would be difficult to get a suntan in those short hours.
FRIDAY, JANUARY 15: Congratulations to Boonville native Rob
Lockwood and his wife Christie of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, on the
birth last evening of a son, Drew McClendon. He entered the world at 6
pounds, 12 ounces, and was 20 inches long. They have one boy and two
girls at home to greet their new brother. He has been in the Marines
for the past 15 years. Happy wishes come from Mom and Dad, Lynn and
Judy Lockwood, of the Boonville Great American, and his sister Kelly
and brother-in-law Greg.
Margaret Levesque called to wish her husband Joe of Beaches Bridge a
happy 55th anniversary.
The coldest morning in Boonville weather history was this morning in
1957 when the temperature dropped to 55 degrees below zero at the
radio station. School was closed as busses wouldn’t start and the
building wouldn’t warm up for classes.
The first episode of the TV series “Happy Days” aired tonight in 1974
and continued for 10 years.
