George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 4th, 2010:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 4: Vacation is
over after enjoying 200 miles of snowmobile trail riding last week.
Grandma and Grandpa Kerber called to congratulate Christian and Kristie
Bjork of Hawkinsville on the birth Saturday of a daughter, Cloe Lynn.
She weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 19 inches long. Unfortunately,
dad is serving in Iraq.
Also, congratulations to Matt and Alana Meyer of Castorland on the birth
of a son, born New Year’s Day. Conner Jacob entered the world at 9
pounds, 4 ounces, and will join his brother Cole who was born New Year’s
Day last year. Happy wishes from all the family.
Eleatha Rogers of the Shibley Road, Lyons Falls, celebrates her 84th
birthday today, with best wishes from her family and friends.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 5: I received an
e-mail yesterday to congratulate Dante and Jill Ross of Greensburg, PA,
on the birth of a daughter, Olivia Marie, who entered the world at 8
pounds, 3 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Jill is the former Jill
Williamson of West Leyden, the daughter of Chuck and Karen Williamson.
Dante is the son of Bill and Carol Ross of Greensburg, PA.
The number one country music artist on tour this past year was Kenny
Chesney who sold $71.1 million worth of concert tickets, according to
Pollstar, a music industry touring publication.
Rock and Roll legend Buddy Holly’s last record, “It Doesn’t Matter
Anymore,” was released today in 1959. But on February 3, 1959, he was
killed in a plane crash, along with Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson,
the Big Bopper.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 6: Happy 26th
anniversary wishes to Glenn and Cindy Redmond of Port Leyden from
George, Linda and Peanut.
With the recent overnight cold temperatures, the Snow Festival crew has
been busy building ice on the track at the Boonville Fairgrounds in
preparation for the snowmobile races on Saturday and Sunday, January 30
and 31. Hopefully, the streets will be snow-covered for the torchlight
parade Friday evening, January 29.
Winter sports have come alive in the last few weeks. The snowmobile
trails have been groomed every other day and the new ice skating rink
behind the Nice N Easy store has opened, with the warming hut open on
Wednesday and Fridays from 4-8 p.m., Saturdays from 1-8 p.m., Sundays
from 1-6 p.m., and is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 7:
Congratulations to Brian and Brandy Laparr of Lowville on the birth of a
son, Karter Joseph, born yesterday. He weighed 10 pounds, 4-1/2 ounces,
and was 22-1/2 inches long. He will join four brothers at home, with
happy wishes from Grandpa and Grandma LaVancha and Grandma Laparr.
Cowboy-singer-movie star Gene Autry premiered a musical variety show on
CBS radio in 1940. The show continued for 16 years. Then in 1950, he
starred in TV’s “The Gene Autry Show,” which ran for six years as
America’s favorite TV cowboy.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 8: Today is the
anniversary of the huge ice storm that started in Northern New York and
Canada. Luckily, the Boonville area only had rain and a lot of it. The
Jackson Hill Weather Station measured 3.11 inches of rain. This created
flooding conditions of the Black River. There was a fear that the
Forestport Dam would fail during the night, but the water levels did
diminish by morning. The ice conditions were found north of Lowville
into Canada. It was reported that 600,000 people in parts of New England
and over 3 million Canadians lost electric power from that massive
storm.
Elvis Presley would have celebrated his 75th birthday today, had he not
died on August 16, 1977, at 42 years old.
