George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of December 21st, 2009:

MONDAY, DECEMBER 21: We send out congratulations to Charlie Ingersoll and Bonnie Tanner of Osceola on the birth last evening of a son, Wyatt. He entered the world at 9 pounds, 2 ounces. He will join his 3-year-old brother Axel at home. Happy wishes from Grandma Dorothy, Gary, Angel, Hayley and Christopher.

The North Country had to brace for a huge lake-effect snowstorm that began today in 1993. By tomorrow morning, 26 inches of snow was measured at the Jackson Hill Weather Station in Boonville. Turin was buried with 45 inches. At one time in Turin, snow was falling at a rate of 5 inches in 20 minutes.

On December 20, 1957, Elvis Presley thought he was opening a Christmas card, but found it was a draft notice from the U.S. Army. He did serve his country and was honorably discharged on March 2, 1960.

Winter officially arrives at 12:47 p.m. today, according to the calendar, but I don’t think we’ll notice the change-over.

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 22: Another cold day in the North Country. Here at the Station we dropped to minus 8 at 7:11 a.m. Our coldest morning on record was in 1989 when the low temperature was minus 19.

Today, Robert Burnham of Glenfield celebrates his 90th birthday, with happy wishes from all his family.

Yesterday morning, Santa’s reindeer were picked up to be transported back to the North Pole in preparation for the big night. These two reindeer were probably the best-looking holiday guests ever to be on display in the Little Village Park.

Carrie Underwood’s Nashville publicist confirmed yesterday that Carrie is engaged to Ottawa Senator’s pro hockey player Mike Fisher. No wedding date has been set.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 23: In the last eight days, we’ve had reports of seven births, and five were girls. Today we send out congratulations to Chris and Taryn Taylor of the Gorge Road. Born yesterday was an 8-pound, 1-ounce boy named Robert Bear Taylor, their first. Best wishes from Chris’ mom and dad.

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 24: Another birth was reported. Congratulations to Tim Hutchins and Andrea Reppard of Boonville who welcome a baby daughter, Macy May, born yesterday morning. She weighed 9 pounds, 11 ounces, and was 21-1/2 inches long. Happy wishes come from the Podkowka and Reppard families.

Happy 46th anniversary wishes to Leon and Wanda Bowen of Boonville, from their son, three daughters, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Today, Elaine Smith of Post Street in Boonville observe her 90th birthday. She was a longtime waitress at the Boonville Hotel.

On Christmas Day, Ed Rybicky of Boonville will reach his 85th birthday, with best wishes from his family and friends.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 25: Christmas Day begins my week’s vacation. I will be back to work on Saturday, January 2.
