George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of December 14th, 2009:

  • MONDAY, DECEMBER 14: Saturday morning was a challenge as I found 15 inches of snow in my driveway and was snow-blowing at 4 a.m. so I could get to the Station. I measured 22 inches from the lake-effect storm.

On Saturday, we sent out congratulations to Josh Mooney and Holly Baslow on the birth Friday afternoon of a son, Aedin Charles, who weighed 7 pounds, 4 ounces, and was 21 inches long, with happy wishes from the Baslow family.

From Friday afternoon through Saturday, thousands of geese were flying over the North Country, even during the storm.

This morning I received a call to congratulate Rick Nellenbach Jr. and Bethany Yauger on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Destiny Ann, who weighed 5 pounds, 14 ounces, with congratulations from the Nellenbach and Yauger families.

Today, Betty Peters, a resident of the Lewis County Extended Care Facility in Lowville, celebrates her 92nd birthday, with best wishes from her four children, 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren, and their spouses.

  • TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15: Congratulations to Willard Bailey and Sara Yauger of Port Leyden on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Rose Elizabeth. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces. Sara’s sister Bethany had her baby the day before, and both sisters and their daughters are recuperating at Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville.

Boonville’s Lost Trail Snowmobile Club has been busy the past several days grooming the network of trails that total 66 miles.

Last week, we observed that lake-effect snow can pile up. It was this day in 1991 when a much larger storm began. I measured 8 inches of snowfall in one hour, with peak winds of 50 mph. I snow-blowed the driveway three times wearing a snowmobile helmet. The storm accumulated 37 inches of snow before ending.

  • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 16: Congratulations to Rick and Mary-Katherine Mathis of West Leyden on the birth Monday of a daughter, Luna Juliana, who entered the world at 8 pounds, 4-1/2 ounces. The proud grandparents are Warren and Eleanor Mathis, Jerry and Terry Britton, and Mara and Emmett Abel.

Happy 79th birthday wishes to Betty Pfendler, a resident of Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, from her family.

Classical music lovers consider Ludwig Van Beethoven one of the greatest orchestra composers of all time. He was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1770. he died in Vienna, March 26, 1827.

Country singer Brad Paisley was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry nine years ago tonight.

  • THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17: Brr, a frigid cold wave has arrived this morning. The temperature dropped to minus 2 at 8:06 a.m., and the windchill was 38 below at 5:56 a.m. here at the Station. Daytime high temperatures for the next seven days will stay in the mid-20s with overnight lows from 0 to 10 above.

We send out congratulations to Will Weber and Jennifer Hall of Boonville on the arrival of a son yesterday afternoon. Drew Richard Eli Weber entered the world at 5 pounds, 12 ounces, and 19 inches long. The proud first-time grandparents are Rich and Elaine Hall and Bob and Rosemary Healt.

There was a new moon Wednesday night, which seems to promote new births. Both of our sons were born on new moons. So far this week, those called in to the Station included three girls and one boy born to North Country residents.

  • FRIDAY, DECEMBER 18: This morning, a 30-year low temperature record was broken of minus 11 at Merry Hill. The previous record was minus 3 in 1979. I recorded minus 16 in the village at 3:01 a.m. Highmarket was the coldest area with a minus 24, with several low 20s reported.

Famous birthdays today include guitarist Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones who is 66, and is a native of Dartford, England. Also, movie director Steven Spielberg was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, 63 years ago today.
