George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of December 7th, 2009:
- MONDAY, DECEMBER 7: Yesterday,
lake-effect snow moved into the area. My rain gauge in the village
measured 5 inches and settled to 1-1/2 inches on the ground. In 1998 the
temperature peaked at 62 for the second day in a row, but was down to 0
in 1989. The most snow on the ground in the past 30 years was 22 inches
in 1984.
Happy 57th anniversary wishes to Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Persons of
Hawkinsville from a friend.
Now that the deer-hunting season has ended, snowmobilers are looking
forward to snowfall to begin their winter fun activities, but locals
generally don’t venture out until New Year’s or sooner if adequate snow
cover prevails.
Hooks Cheese Company of Mineral Point, Wisconsin, has put 1,200 pounds
of 15-year-old sharp cheddar on the market, priced at $50 a pound, and
they report it’s selling well.
Yesterday a flock of 50 to 60 white Canadian geese were seen in a big
field just out of Boonville on Route 12D.
In 1965 Chevrolet produced their 3,000,000th car for the year for the
first time.
- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 8:
Congratulations to Bill and Sara Glouse of Boonville on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Natalie Drew. She entered the world at 7
pounds, 8 ounces, and joins a big sister Brenna at home.
Mary Konkol of Watson can light up 86 birthday candles on her cake, with
happy wishes from nephews John and Don, and from great-nephew Nathan.
Singer-songwriter John Lennon, formerly of the Beatles, was shot and
killed in front of his Manhattan apartment building on this day in 1980
by an obsessed fan, Mark David Chapman.
In 1982, Country Music Hall of Famer Marty Robbins died of a heart
attack just two months after his induction.
- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 9: Our
forecast indicates a large storm will begin today and continue through
Friday with heavy snowfall and high winds. This storm will pass, with
Sunday looking like the best day.
I received a card to send birthday wishes to Lenny Kirk of Boonville.
He’s the president of the Boonville VFW’s Men’s Auxiliary and can
celebrate with a pair of 5’s. Best wishes from his VFW friends and his
friends at the Boonville Elks Lodge.
Actor Kirk Douglas was born in Amsterdam, NY, 93 years ago.
If you watched the TV series, “Eight is Enough,” you will remember actor
Dick Van Patten. He was born in Richmond Hill, NY, 81 years ago.
- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 10: So far
Boonville has escaped the lake-effect snow that has stayed North of
Lowville. We have had the high winds with a 39-mph gust in the village
at 10:09 a.m. yesterday, with Rick Beyer on the Rector Road clocking a
70-mph gust at 11:28 a.m. yesterday morning.
Congratulations to Chris and Christina Chartrand of Lowville on the
birth yesterday of a daughter. She has been named Charlie Emerson Lynn
and weighed 8 pounds, 14 ounces. She will join brothers Anthony and
Lucas at home. Happy wishes come from the Chartrand and White families.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11: The big
snowstorm that arrived in Lowville yesterday appears to be headed this
way towards Boonville. We better locate our shovels and gas up our
snow-blowers. We’ve had winds with light snow clocking 30-mph at 5:11
a.m. this morning. Lake Ontario’s water temperature this morning is 44
degrees, which means that the cold west winds crossing the lake could
bring a sizeable snowfall today, as lake-effect snow is created. We’ll
know by Saturday how much was generated.
