George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of March 2nd, 2009:
- MONDAY, MARCH 2: Happy 29th
anniversary wishes to Ma and Dad Manning of Collinsville Hill from
Heather and Tonya and family. Scott and Cindy Bourgeois of Boonville
celebrate their 18th anniversary, with congratulations from Mom next
door. NBC weatherman Al Roker mentioned Boonville this morning, but it
was Boonville, Alabama, which received 7 to 9 inches of snow. If you are
starting to feel cabin fever, there may be a good reason. Boonville’s
first 4 inches of snow started falling on October 28 and never went
away, with 19-1/2 inches on the ground today in the village. As a large
coastal storm comes up the coast, I’ve clocked winds of 29 mph several
times today, but no snow was associated with it.
- TUESDAY, MARCH 3: Happy 47th
anniversary wishes to Tom and Maryellen McManus of Lyons Falls from
Doug, Beth, Amanda, Michael, and Heather. Mary B. Mamrosh of Remsen
celebrates her 88th birthday today, with love from her daughter Connie.
The inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell, was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1847. He died in Nova Scotia, Canada, on August
2, 1922. Florida became our 27th state in 1845. At 9:22 p.m. last
evening in 2005, an earthquake rattled an area southeast of Cornwall,
Ontario, measuring 2.5 on the Richter Scale, but wasn’t felt down here.
- WEDNESDAY, MARCH 4: Jim and Clara
Davoy of the Number Four Road in Lowville observe their 67th anniversary
today, with lots of love from their family. In 1991, freezing rain
created an ice thickness of an inch and a half, coating everything in
its path. Schools in the area were closed, with driving conditions
treacherous until sanders arrived on the roadways. It was March 4, 1938,
when the movie serial, “The Lone Ranger,” was shown in theaters and was
based on the radio program that began in 1933. Country comedian Minnie
Pearl died in 1996. She appeared for over 20 years on the Hee-Haw TV
series.
- THURSDAY, MARCH 5: The National
Weather Service in Denver, Colorado, reported that a 137-year-old high
temperature record was broken at 12:40 p.m. yesterday at the Denver
International Airport when 76 degrees was reached. The old record was 74
degrees in 1872 when climate records began. Here at the station our high
temperature was 27 degrees at 12:57 p.m. In 1960, Elvis Presley was
discharged from the Army after serving two years, and resumed his
career. He died on August 16, 1977. Nine years later, he was the first
10 to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He earned 94 gold
singles and over 40 gold albums during his lifetime.
- FRIDAY, MARCH 6: Hank Treen of
Echo Lake reported three robins yesterday, even though snowbanks were 8
feet high. He said normally they arrive near March 17. Summer resident
John Gilbert called from north of Tampa, Florida, before 6 a.m. and
reported it was 47 degrees. He said huge flocks of robins have been
gathering and, as of this morning, have left the area, about two weeks
later than normal. On this date in 1986, the biggest storm of the year
began. By tomorrow morning, 19.3 inches of snow was measured at the
Jackson Hill Weather Station. In 2004, the largest skunk I’ve every seen
waddled across the radio station lawn.
