George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 23rd, 2009:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 23: I found a
note in our mailbox to wish David and Donna Sweeney a happy 35th
anniversary from Brian, Erin, Josephine, Adeline, Lauren and Clancy.
Saturday brought beautiful snowmobiling conditions with heavy traffic
now that the southern sections of the state have lost their usable snow.
Unfortunately, our news department had to report three deaths on the
trails, but none in the Boonville area. It was today in 2003 when our
son Dan was a cross-country competitor in the Empire State Games in
pouring rain at Lake Placid. On Saturday’s program, we wished Mary
Rowlands a happy 86th birthday at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation
Center, with best wishes from daughter Suzie and Tom from North
Carolina, and her local family.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 24: Tom and Kim
Stanley of Port Leyden celebrate their 30th anniversary, with happy
wishes from their family and friends. Highmarket weather observer Bub
Morczek said he saw one red-wing blackbird this past Saturday. He said
last year the first one arrived on March 11. One of the first five
baseball players to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, Honus
Wagner, was born today in Carnegie, PA, in 1874. He died in his hometown
on December 6, 1955. Nicknamed the “Flying Dutchman,” baseball cards
with his picture are rare and very valuable to collectors.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 25: Today,
twins Steven and Andrew Plows of Constableville celebrate their 5th
birthday, with love from Papa, Nanna, and Aunt Leanne. Snowmobiling in
the Boonville area offers near perfect trails with a good solid base.
The groomers have been out continuously the past two days, with the new
Port Leyden trail being groomed this morning. Weather extremes for this
day shows a high temperature of 53 degrees in 1976, and a low of minus
19 at the station in 1993. The most new snow was 17.7 inches in 1998,
and the most snow on the ground at the weather station was 56 inches in
1972.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26: Boonville
mail carrier Pup Leffingwell and wife Karen at Nice-N-Easy celebrate
their 37th anniversary today. Marie Conway of Turin celebrates her 93rd
birthday, with best wishes from her four children and their families.
Johnny Cash was born in Kingsland, Arkansas, in 1932. He died on
September 12, 2003, from complications of diabetes. He’s been a New
Orleans legend. Fats Domino reaches his 81st birthday. Frontiersman
William “Buffalo Bill” Cody was born in Scott County, Iowa, in 1846. He
died in Denver, Colorado, on January 10, 1917.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27: Happy 55th
anniversary wishes to Bob and Elinor Zeigler of Boonville from Marlene
and all the Caprons. Best wishes to Virginia Burke of Port Leyden on her
90th birthday, from the Lowville Isenekers. Howard Hesseman from the TV
series “WKRP In Cincinnati,” was born in Salem, Oregon, in 1940. Actress
Elizabeth Taylor was born in London, England, 77 years ago. The 22nd
amendment of the U.S. Constitution was ratified in 1950, limiting the
President’s office to two terms.
