George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of February 2nd, 2009:
- MONDAY, FEBRUARY 2: Another
successful Snow Festival in Boonville was enjoyed by thousands of
spectators. The Friday evening torch-light parade brought close to 265
sleds into the lineup. I had the honor of being the first snowmobiler in
the long string, and presented Andy Seelman with the parade grand
marshal award on stage in front of the grandstand during opening
ceremonies. Punxsutawney Phil, the famous Pennsylvania groundhog, did
see his shadow for the 15th time out of the last 20 years. History shows
that the first Groundhog Day was celebrated in 1887. On last night’s
date in 2003, both the Post House roof and the wooden bridge over the
Feeder Canal collapsed under snow weight. Thankfully, both were replaced
and are in good shape. On this day in 1876, the National League of
Professional Baseball Clubs, now commonly known as the National League,
was formed. The American League (AL) was established in 1901 and in 1903
the first World Series was held.
- TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 3: It’s a bit
unusual, Carthage and Copenhagen schools had a two-hour delay because of
fog. It froze to the roadways, creating slippery conditions. We had
dense fog, and frost feathers were formed on trees and wires, giving us
a winter wonderland look. Yesterday during the noon hour, two young deer
trotted down the radio station driveway and eventually waddled through
the 20 inches of snow in the field. Happy birthday today to Glenyce
Trainor of Boonville, with love from Marilyn, Carl, Diana, and grandson
Brian. I had a report of snow rollers in a farm field between Harrisburg
and Copenhagen. Some were about a foot in diameter and some were
football shaped. Snow conditions and wind have to be near perfect for
these to form and start to roll. Years ago there was a picture in the
NYS Conservationist magazine of one on Whiteface Mountain that was 5
feet in diameter. Softball to basketball size may be found in this area.
- WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 4: Is it good
news or bad? Today marks the halfway point of winter. I received a call
to send congratulations to Josh Breen and Lindsey Holloran of Boonville
on the birth yesterday of a daughter, Raelynne Marina Skye. She weighed
8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 21 inches long. Happy wishes from Marina,
Mom, and the entire Mills family.
- THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5: Grandma and
Grandpa Dutch called to congratulate Kari Dutch and Joe Cullings of
Boonville on the birth of a daughter, Kendal Korrin, born yesterday
morning. She weighed 7 pounds, 10 ounces, and was 20-1/2 inches long.
She will join big sister Kira at home. Happy 56th anniversary wishes to
Jack and Joan Phillips of Alder Creek, from their family and longtime
friends. Erma Seymour of Boonville celebrates her 91st birthday, with
happy wishes from her family and friends. Happy birthday also to Lloyd
Ormiston of Port Leyden, who celebrates his 80th birthday, from his
friends. For those out of the area, our website, www.themoose.net, now
contains the day’s local news, snowmobile trail reports and weather, and
is updated daily. Check it out. From 1985 to the present, this year has
measured the most snowfall with 179.1 total inches, and the year 2000
had the least with 65.6 inches. There have been six years with more snow
on the ground, with 2003 and 2004 both recording 41 inches. Currently,
31 inches was measured this morning at the Merry Hill Weather Station.
Summer residents John and Audrey Gilbert reported from their winter home
in Florida that the temperature dropped to 26 degrees north of Tampa.
Also, power lines shrunk and snapped, leaving sections of Orlando in the
dark this morning. Son Chris called from Denver last evening and said
they’ve had temperatures in the 70s and the street sweepers were out
yesterday cleaning up the road sand and dirt.
- FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6: Boonville
residents Don and Mary Schue of Boonville, who spend the winter in
Florida, called this morning and reported it was 30 degrees south of
Daytona Beach. At the time they called, it was 10 degrees here at the
station. In 2006, Boonville was enjoying sunshine, but 22 miles north of
Lowville, lake-effect snow dropped 18 inches on Lowville and vicinity.
Baseball legend George Herman “Babe” Ruth was born in Baltimore,
Maryland, in 1895. He played in 10 World Series, pounded out 714 home
runs in 22 Major League seasons, and died in New York City on August 16,
1948. Our 40th President Ronald Reagan was born in Tampico, Illinois, in
1911. The Beatles flew into Kennedy Airport in New York for their first
American visit, February 7, 1964. Two days later, an appearance on the
Ed Sullivan TV show gave America their first look at the soon to be
music superstars.
