George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 26th, 2009:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 26: Finally, a
weekend went by without new snowfall, but later today we might make up
for it with 6 to 11 inches of snow possible later today north of
Boonville. On Saturday, Pauline Shue of Lyons Falls celebrated her 85th
birthday, and her family sent their love. Today, Francis Lahah of Route
12, Boonville, observes her 91st birthday, with best wishes from her
family. Ed and Liz Berger of the Smith Road, near Hawkinsville, reach
their 52nd anniversary, with congratulations from Aubrey and Irene
Grenier. Wayne and Winnie Kent of Boonville will celebrate their 35th
anniversary, with love from their children and grandchildren.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 27: The
lake-effect snow stayed north of Boonville last night, with a trace in
the Village. Up on the Rector Road out of Lowville, Rick Beyer measured
5 inches. Kermit Klingbail of West Leyden celebrates his 78th birthday,
with best wishes from Ian, Joanie, and family. Super Bowl party shoppers
are stocking up with canned beer this week. The first canned beer made
its debut on January 14, 1935, in Richmond, Virginia. The Gottfried
Krueger Brewing Company produced 2,000 cans, which were a big success.
In 1956, Elvis Presley recorded the first RCA single, “Heartbreak
Hotel.” In 1959, Johnny Horton recorded his biggest hit, “The Battle of
New Orleans.”
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 28: Today,
Emerson Wood of Port Leyden counts up 78 birthday candles, with happy
wishes from his family and friends. The million dollar mansion built for
Roy Orbison in the 1960s, then in the early 1980s owned by Tammy Wynette,
burned Sunday evening in Hendersonville, Tennessee. The current owners
were not home at the time.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 29: Happy 38th
wedding anniversary wishes to Bob and Gloria Dosztan of Lowville, from
their friends. Marie Burnham of Glenfield celebrates her 81st birthday,
with congratulations from her family. Baseball fans take notice. It was
today in 1936 when the U.S. Baseball Hall of Fame elected their first
members in Cooperstown. They included Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner,
Christy Matthewson, and Walter Johnson. He was a co-star in the TV
series, “Charlie’s Angels.” John Forsythe was born in Penn’s Grove, New
Jersey, 91 years ago. Talk show host Oprah Winfrey, a native of
Kosciusko, MS, counts up 55 birthday candles today.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 30: We received a
call to send retirement wishes to Jim Lehman, who has worked for 33-1/2
years at the Lowville Academy School bus garage, and today is his last
day. Best wishes from Alec, Matt, Sam, Grace, Boyd, and Buddy. Happy
83rd birthday wishes to Richard Fuller of Petries Corner, with love and
best wishes from Terry, Sharon and Patch. In weather history, on
tomorrow’s date in 1988, the high temperature was 51, but in 1973 it was
17 below. The most snow was measured in 1978 with 55 inches in the
woods. The least amount was 1 inch on the ground in 2006. In 1991, five
of us snowmobilers rode from Boonville to Woodhull Lake back of McKeever
and encountered heavy snow. The group included Andy Seelman, Harold Haig,
Pete Belyea, Kenny Pond, and myself. By the next morning, Boonville had
measured 25 inches of lake-effect fluff.
