George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 19th, 2009:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 19: There’s been
a lot of activity at the Boonville Fairgrounds, as workers clear snow
and make ice in preparation for the upcoming Snow Festival. This is
turning into an old-fashioned winter, with 158.8 inches of snowfall to
date; 30 inches on the ground at the Weather Station, and we’re only up
to January 19. There have been eight years with season-ending snowfall
totals that were less than our present total: The year ending in 1951,
with 141 inches; 1953, 157 inches; 1983, 105 inches; 1995, 123 inches;
1998, 151 inches; 1998, 148 inches; 2001, 131 inches, and 2006, 157
inches. This past Saturday, 62 snowmobiles participated in the Boonville
Lost Trail Snowmobile Club’s poker run. The snowmobile trials have been
excellent and I have over 600 miles on my new snowmobile. I rode 121
miles this weekend with some awesome scenery in the wooded sections
between Ava and Lee Center. On Saturday, Dick and Karen Charbonneau of
Boonville reached their 50th anniversary, with congratulations from
their family.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 20: Yesterday,
Elsie Berger, a resident at the Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center
in Boonville, celebrated her 90th birthday, with happy wishes from her
family. Today looks to be snow-free for a change. It seems like we
measure snow about every day. In weather history, in 1994 a huge
lake-effect snowstorm dumped nearly 60 inches of snow in Adams, NY, in
17 hours. The three-day storm exceeded 100 inches and was one of the
greatest lake-effect snowfalls ever recorded.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21:
Congratulations to Michael J. and Miranda Zeigler Bush Jr. of Lowville
on the birth Tuesday of a son, Damon Michael. He arrived at 7 pounds, 11
ounces, and was 21 inches long. The proud grandparents are Michael and
Mary Bush Sr. of Croghan, and Larry and Cindy Zeigler of Boonville.
Happy 20th anniversary wishes to Doug and Margaret Halliday of Lowville,
from their families and friends. Country music singer-songwriter Mac
Davis was born in Lubbock, Texas, 67 years ago. His best remembered
songs include “Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me,” Stop and Smell the Roses,”
and “Texas in My Rearview Mirror.”
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 22:
Congratulations to Shawn and Jennifer Andrews of Boonville on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Molly Margaret, weighing in at 7 pounds, 5-1/2
ounces, who will join 2-year-old brother, Samuel. Happy wishes from
family and friends. Also, congratulations to Leonard and Tiffany Ward of
Rochester on the birth of a son, Kaydon Jayse. He weighed 6 pounds, 13
ounces, and is their first baby. Leonard is a native of Turin, and best
wishes come from Great-Grandma Ward and family. Jim Davoy of the Number
Four Road in Watson celebrates his 86th birthday, with lots of love from
his family. I received a call from summer residents, John and Audrey
Gilbert, that the temperature in Florida, north of Tampa, was 25
degrees. At the time, it was 20 degrees here at the Station. Orchard and
vegetable growers were spraying with water to save their crops. This
morning in 1997 is a date I’ll always remember. Between a quarter and a
half-inch of ice coated everything. Roads were closed, as well as all
schools. Driving was impossible, so I came to work on my snowmobile,
using the Northern Trail, and parked in the driveway. It took hours to
get the roads salted and sanded before traffic could resume.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 23: Today, Dave
and Marlene Pritchard of Boonville reach their 44th anniversary, with
congratulations from their children and grandchildren. Rod and Linda
Smith of Forestport celebrate their 38th anniversary, with best wishes
from Adam, Tonya, and Jack. Also celebrating their 38th anniversary are
Mike and Joanie Glenn of Lowville, with congratulations from the West
family. Doris Murray of the Kerwin Road reaches her 80th birthday today,
with happy wishes from son Tim, Tandra, and family. Today in 1971,
Prospect Creek, Alaska, set a record for the lowest temperature in the
U.S. when 80 degrees below zero was reached.
