George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 12th, 2009:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 12: Yesterday,
with clear skies, I took my longest snowmobile ride this year, from
Boonville to Lyons Falls, on the new trail, and was very impressed. I
then rode to Tug Hill and back to Boonville for a total of 58 miles on
beautifully groomed trails, and traffic was light. On arrival home, the
temperature was one-degree above zero. Today, Kermit and Joyce Klingbail
of West Leyden observe their 52nd anniversary, with congratulations from
Ian, Joanie, and family. We reported in 1997 that Montague measured 77
inches of snow in 24 hours and probably broke the previous record of 76
inches in Silver Lake, Colorado, in 1921. The snowfall continued, ending
with 95 inches of lake-effect snow. The National Winter Service on May
2, 1997, denied Montague the record because of what they said was
incorrect record-keeping. Boonville received 20.2 inches from that
storm.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 13: Andy and
Dawn Croniser of Woodgate celebrate their 20th anniversary today, with
happy wishes from their children, Atlas, age 2, and Kiersten, 5 months,
and all their family. Weather extremes for this day finds a high
temperature of 51 degrees in 1995 and a low temperature of minus 21 in
1982. The most snow on the ground in 30 years was 60 inches in 1978.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 14: The arctic
blast arrived yesterday afternoon, bringing 6 to 8 inches of slippery
snow and winds up to 51 mph on the Rector Road in Martinsburg. Here at
the Station the temperature dropped to minus 19 at 7:46 a.m. this
morning. In folklore, today is known as St. Hilary Day and is said to be
the coldest day of the year. The family of Evelyn Jackson of Lowville
would like to wish her a happy 101st birthday today. She may appreciate
all her candles on her cake because of the heat value. Today’s
temperature may reach zero. CBS 60 Minutes’ commentator Andy Rooney was
born in Albany, NY, 90 years ago.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 15: Happy 80th
birthday wishes to Bob Croniser of Locust Grove from wife Sally and
daughter Cindy and family. The first “Happy Days” TV episode was
presented tonight in 1974. The show was the highest rated comedy during
the 1976-77 season and stayed in the top 20 for seven of its 10 seasons.
Black civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta,
Georgia, in 1929. He was assassinated in Memphis, TN, on April 4, 1968.
A bill was signed by the President to make the third Monday in January a
legal holiday starting in 1986.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 16: Wow, what a
frigid night. The village low reading was minus 19 at 11:06 p.m., minus
20 here at the Station, and minus 30 in Highmarket. The snowmobile
trails offer perfect riding conditions with heavy grooming this past
week. The cross-country ski trails are also in great shape. The
Boonville Search and Rescue warm-up building, next to the Headwaters
Plaza, is open weekend from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be open all week
during the school’s mid-winter break. On tomorrow’s date in 1994, a
large bald eagle payed a visit to the Boonville Transfer Site on Route
12, north of the village. In 1953, at a car show at New York’s
Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Chevrolet introduced their sporty new car named
the Corvette with a fiberglass body.
