George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of January 5th, 2009:
- MONDAY, JANUARY 5: On Saturday,
January 3, Theda Montgomery of Boonville celebrated her 89th birthday
with wishes for many more from her kids, Lonnie, Duane and Charlene.
Weather extremes on this day include a high temperature of 53 in 2007
and a low of minus 26 in both 1976 and 1981. There was no snow on the
ground in 1993, 1997, and 2007. The North Country experienced a freezing
mist early this morning, which glazed many secondary roads. Seven
schools from Holland Patent to Carthage all had one or two-hour delays
while sanders hurried to sand and salt the roadways.
- TUESDAY, JANUARY 6: Happy 87th
birthday to Harold Glouse of Boonville, from his family and especially
from great-granddaughters, Kylee, Taylor, and Brenna. New Mexico became
our 47th state in 1912 to join the Union. In 1980 on this day, President
Jimmy Carter authorized $1.2 billion in federal loans to save Chrysler
Corporation from bankruptcy. Lee Iacocca became the company’s CEO,
bringing the company back and profitable, and the money was paid back.
Yesterday at a Tokyo fish auction, a premium Japanese blue-fin tuna,
weighing 282 pounds, was sold for $104,700 to two sushi bar owners. That
computes down to about $370 a pound.
- WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 7: Freezing
rain arrived again causing five schools to remain closed and four others
to delay their starting times. All senior nutrition centers in Lewis and
Oneida counties were also closed. John and Karen Lawrence are proud
parents of a 10-pound baby boy. Ethan John was born Monday at Lewis
County General Hospital. Happy wishes are from Gramma, Poppa, and
Ashley. In 1985, General Motors started the Saturn Corporation and it
was an instant success. In 1989 at the North American International
Automobile Show, Dodge introduced their new high performance car called
the Viper with a 450 horsepower and V-10 engine.
- THURSDAY, JANUARY 8: Another
lake-effect snow warning has been issued for today with Oneida County
expecting 5 to 9 inches of additional snow. This morning the Merry Hill
Weather Station measured 10.4 inches of new snow, breaking the old
35-year-old record of 9.3 inches in 1974. Adirondack Central School
decided to remain closed today in anticipation of more heavy snow. The
next two weeks generally is the timeframe that frost starts to heave
area roadways, creating uncomfortable driving conditions every year.
Route 46, the Gorge Road, is one of the most notorious, as several
springs drain under the roadway and then freeze up.
- FRIDAY, JANUARY 9: A cold morning
greeted us, with a minus 9 reading at 7:48 a.m. here at the station, but
only 3/10 of an inch of new snow. Grandma and Grandpa Hoffert called to
congratulate Nana Tittle and Terry Hoffert Jr. on the birth yesterday of
a baby girl, Maria El. The couple lives in Port Leyden. I’m happy to
report that the Boonville Street Department has been busy removing some
of the snowbanks along the streets, that were becoming very narrow, as
snowfalls lately required daily plowing.
